If you like play puzzle games, here is a new kind of jigsaw puzzle that you may want to try, a puzzle that has no beginning or end. You can keep playing and playing like no end…

Inspired by topological spaces that continuously tile, the infinity puzzle has no fixed shape, no starting point, and no edges, and can be assembled in thousands of different ways. It’s a pretty challenging wood puzzle that tiles in the plane, meaning that any piece on the bottom can be moved to the top and a piece on the right can be moved to the left. Topologically, it is equivalent to a torus, which can be described by its fundamental polygon showing how edges of a square map to each other to make a closed shape.

The single pack costs $40, comes with 51 pieces in smallest size at 6×6 inches. Multiple copies of the puzzle can be combined in different colors to create abstract patterns and shapes.
The post The Infinity Puzzle first appeared on KC's Blog.

I could solve one side of a Rubik’s cube, or even two when I was like 10 years old and always thought that it’s the way to solve a Rubik’s cube, side-by-side. Guess what?

I was completely wrong.

By eventually solving it lately with my kids, I realized that it’s rather a layer-by-layer game using a technique called CFOP (Cross-F2L-OLL-PLL) or block-by-block if using a different method called Roux.

Here is a simplified, easy-to-follow version of steps to solve a 3×3 Rubik’s Cube from a 6-Stage process from the official Rubik’s website, using the CFOP method.

Step 1 – Solve the White Cross

The goal of this step is to hold the cube with the white centerpiece on the top face and create a white cross as shown below:

Step 2 – Solve the White Corner

The goal is to make the cube like below with the white cross in the top face.

Tips – Find the white corner piece and turn it to one of the following positions:

And use the following sequence 1x, 2x, 3x, or more until it’s in the right position.

Step 3 – Solve the Middle Layer

The goal:

Tips – create a vertical line by rotating the top face until the front color of the edge piece on the top face without yellow on it matches the side centerpiece. For example,

If you see this:

Use the following sequence to move the blue piece to the right.

And if you see this:

Continue these steps until all the edge pieces are in the right position.

Step 4 – Solve the Top Layer

The goal:

There are two steps to solve this:

1st Step: Make a yellow cross

2nd Step: Make all the corners yellow

Hold the cube to match your face to one of the following states.

Repeat the following sequence until all the corners are yellow.

Step 5 – Solve the Final Layer

There are also two steps involved to solve the final piece of this puzzle.

1st Step: Position yellow corners correctly

The goal is to make all 4 corners in the right place, like below:

Hold the cube and place the 2 correct corners in the back, like A, B in the picture below:

then do the sequence below to switch C and D.

You may need to repeat this step a couple of times to get all the corners in the right place.

2nd Step: Position yellow edges correctly

If there is only one edge correctly placed, hold the Cube with the correct edge facing back. Then determine how the E, F, and G pieces need to move, clockwise or counter-clockwise.

If no edges are placed correctly, then do either sequence below once.

To cycle EFG clockwise, do this sequence:

To cycle EFG counter-clockwise,

The post 5-Step to Solve A 3×3 Rubik’s Cube first appeared on KC's Blog.

Don’t be jealous, having a dedicated day to be appreciated could also mean we sysadmins get no respect the rest of the year.
“Uptime Funk” music video (parody of Uptown Funk) from SUSECon 2015 in Amsterdam.

Lyrics

This bit
Uncontrolled
A bad bug,
Make my system fold
This bug, in the kernel
My kernel
My uptime ceases
Freakin’, Spazzin’
My manager’s mad, it ain’t pretty
I need caffeine, a big screen
Gotta fix this server in a jiffy

It’s too hot (hot patch)
Call Torvalds and Kroah-Hartman
It’s too hot (hot patch)
Make a Sys Admin retire man
It’s too hot (hot patch)
Holy cow, am I in a jam
It’s too hot (hot patch)
Tellin’ ya now it ain’t that funny
Server’s down

Live patching hallelujah (whoo)
Live patching hallelujah (whoo)
Live patching hallelujah (whoo)
‘Cause Uptime Funk gon’ give it to ya
‘Cause Uptime Funk gon’ give it to ya
‘Cause Uptime Funk gon’ give it to ya
Saturday night and servers alright
Don’t reboot it just patch (come on)
Don’t reboot it just patch
Don’t reboot it just patch
Don’t reboot it just patch
Don’t reboot it just patch
Don’t reboot it just patch
Hey, hey, hey, oh

Halt
Don’t reboot, init
Found a fix, grab code from git
Make a build, passed the tests
Julio! Make a patch!
Ride to Provo, Nuremberg, Newbury in the UK
We got Linux, and there’s no doubt
Gonna fix that server in a jiffy

I’m all green (hot patch)
Called a Penguin and Chameleon
I’m all green (hot patch)
Call Torvalds and Kroah-Hartman
It’s too hot (hot patch)
Yo, say my name you know who I am

Go to 1-800-Got-Junk’s website and take look its smarty Junk Genie. Take a ride if you may.

Done? and amazed?

Is it really that smart? The sneaky Junk Genie pretends to be smart by taking great advantage of the magic number 9.

Take a close look at the steps you have to take:

1. thinking of a number of 2 digits, i.e. 38;

2. subtract the 2 digits from the original number. 38 – 3 – 8 = 27

What does that mean in a math language?

A 2-digital number can be represented as X * 10 + Y. For example, 38 = 3 * 10 + 8. So a math formula of the step 2 is like this:

X * 10 + Y – X – Y = X * 9

Meaning, not matter which 2-digit number you have in mind, the result from Step 2 is always the first digit times 9. Or another words, a number that can be divided by number 9.

Now, let’s go back to the Junk Genie, take look the table that lists all types of junk you might be thinking of. The answer always falls into one of the circle below and what’s in that circle is the same type of the junk that will display in the next window.

To trick you in wonder, Junk Genie generates a different table or randomly show a table from a pool of predefined table that would represent different answer from different tryout. But no matter what table shows, the content in the circled place is always the same.
The post The Secret of Junk Genie first appeared on KC's Blog.

When I say creative, they are indeed creative, full of imagination crazy jokes that are totally harmless but would make you laugh to death.

Prank #1

At work we once put on someones unattended laptop computer:

Outlook Rule that went something like this:

when receive email with subject ‘duh’

delete email

launch the calculator

play a Homer Simpson audio clip ‘lets do some calculating’

Later in a meeting while he was using that laptop for a presentation he would have mysterious calculators pop up with Homer Simpson sounds.

Prank #2

My all time favourite was a small application I wrote and installed on a colleagues computer.

It silently ran in the background and chimed every hour by opening and closing the CD tray and playing a “cuckoo” sound.

Effectively turning their PC into a cuckoo clock.

Note, the poster even shares the source code so you can easily download and play on it. But you will have to visit the site to find the link.

Prank #3

Every day, at the end of the day, he’d pick up the mouse and squeeze the mouse cord following it up back to the computer when she was watching – but not when anyone else was around.

Eventually her curiosity got the better of her, and she asked about his habit. He explained that he was pushing the electrons back up into the computer so the mouse wouldn’t get bogged down with extra electrons every day and eventually get slower and slower.

She soon took up the habit, and hilarity ensued when her boss asked her about it.

Prank #4

Well, back in the day, I removed the ball from a friends mouse. Can’t really do that one anymore… A lot of fun can still be had with Windows’ startup sound if they’ve got speakers.

Commented by:

The first April 1 on my current job, I went around the office and put scotch tape on the bottom of everyone’s mouse, including mine, except for one co-worker’s.

Many more on the original post, check it out.
