Virtual Desktop vs. Desktop Virtualization
This had confused me before so I am sure if you are just into Virtualization world you might be confused on what’s the difference between these two types of virtualization. Rodney Buike had a great post up on IT Pro Connection that explains pretty well what they are.
Basically, Desktop Virtualization is the act of running a virtual machine on a desktop PC while the Desktop Virtualization is having the virtual machines running on a server in the datacenter.
So if you have a running virtual machine on your desktop using Virtual PC, VMware Workstation, Sun VirtualBox, etc., you are using Desktop Virtualization. If you are using Virtual Machine via Remote Desktop connection, you are using Virtual Desktop because simply the virtual machine is running on the server not on your local desktop. The picture below is a typical use of Virtual Desktop.
I have two Virtual Machines running on Virtual PC on my local 32-bit Windows 7 RC, so yes I am using Desktop Virtualization technology at the moment. But I am planning on moving both of them off to the Hyper-V machine I am building, so soon I will be using Virtual Desktop technology instead to free up my Windows 7 resources.

Wow, I believe that’s not going to be easy to accomplish by just one person. And as far as I know, there is nothing like this out of the box. Please share if you find something useful.
Cheers, Kent
